Mario Draghi calls for European solidarity on immigration

by

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi briefed parliament today on his country’s position ahead of tomorrow’s European summit.

Regarding immigration, the Italian Prime Minister stressed:

“This is an issue that Italy raises with great determination. We will continue to call for solidarity, unity, human and safe management of the problem. The European Union must show that it can live up to its values, as urged by “Pope Francis: We need a clear EU commitment to humanitarian routes, legal migration routes must be strengthened, but repatriation must be common and effective.”

Regarding the coronavirus pandemic, Mario Draghi stated that “over 85% of Italians over the age of 12 have taken both doses and about 20% on the third”. “We have to be careful, but we get to Christmas safer and with more effective means,” he added.

He explained that “his government has decided to extend the state of emergency until March 31 to have at its disposal all the necessary means to deal with the situation.”

Finally, in connection with the increase in energy costs, the Italian technocratic prime minister predicted that the whole situation should be normalized, to some extent, within the next year and reminded that his government has already allocated 4 billion euros to support economically weaker households, while in 2022 but 3.8 billion euros will be allocated.
