Italy: The League proposes a tax deduction for civil and religious marriages – Meloni does not consider it

In the intentions of Matteo Salvini’s party, the marriage discount will be addressed to couples up to 35 years of age and with a total annual income of up to 23,000 euros. The maximum amount of 20,000 will be tax deductible by filing five tax returns and the measure, according to what was announced, will only concern couples who have had Italian citizenship for at least ten years.

The League of Matteo Salvini, with a draft law submitted to the Parliament of Rome, asked to be able to deduct 20% of the total cost of every wedding celebrated in Italy.

Initially, the proposal only concerned religious marriages, but after a series of reactions, Lega MP Domenico Furziuele, declared that “the measure will apply to all marriages, both those celebrated in church and politicians”.

The proposal does not include civil partnerships and same-sex couples. Sources of the Italian government, however, leaked a while ago that the specific measure will not be included in the next state budget and that the Meloni government, at this stage, does not intend to start examining it.
