Presence of the King of Spain in Qatar is criticized by the governing party

by

The announced presence of the King of Spain, Felipe VI, on Wednesday (23) in his country’s first game at the World Cup in Qatar was criticized on Monday (21) by the radical left-wing party Podemos, which governs alongside of socialists.

“It was regrettable (…) to hear the Royal House, before making any critical objection about what is happening there (in Qatar), announce its presence in this World Cup,” said Gerardo Pisarello, deputy for Podemos in Congress, in Collective interview.

The Royal House informed on Friday (18th) that the Spanish head of state will go to the Al Thumama stadium on Wednesday to watch the match between Spain and Costa Rica.

In several European countries, the presence of official government representatives has been the subject of debates due to recurrent criticisms of Qatar in terms of human rights.

Podemos, a minority partner of Pedro Sánchez’s socialists in the Spanish government, is an openly republican party critical of the monarchy.
