The victim was a worker for the French humanitarian organization Solidarités International poy mainly organizes food distributions in the area.

A worker with the French aid group Solidarités international was killed when he was ambushed by an armed group in northern Mozambique, an area wracked by jihadist violence for more than five years, the NGO said on Tuesday.

Solidarités international “is in a state of shock following the news of the death of our colleague, the victim of an attack by an armed group” on Sunday on a road in the Muidubbe region on his way to Palma, in the province of Campo Delgado, says a press release from the NGO.

This impoverished, mostly Muslim northern province neighboring Tanzania has suffered jihadist attacks that have killed more than 4,400 people, including nearly 2,000 civilians, since October 2017, according to the non-governmental organization. ACLED, which compiles data on war zones. The violence has also forced one million people from their homes, according to the UN.

The victim, about thirty years old, was a Mozambican citizen, a representative of the organization, which is based in Paris and is present in 23 countries, told AFP. Other people were also killed, the spokeswoman added, adding that she was unable to give details at this stage.

The generally well-informed Zitamar news site reported a total of five dead, including the operational commander of the Palma police, his wife, nephew and the aid worker.

The latter was on his way after the weekend to Palma from the provincial capital of Pemba when his car was targeted, Solidarités international said.

In March 2021, a deadly raid, meticulously planned, caused chaos in Palma, a strategic port of 75,000 inhabitants. A major liquefied natural gas project by the French group TotalEnergies, a few kilometers away, has been suspended.

The organization Solidarités international, often present in Mozambique, where it returned last year, mainly organizes food distributions in the region.

“The killing of our colleague and the civilians who were traveling with him shocks and disgusts us,” said the director of the NGO, Kevin Goldberg, according to the press release.
