A gunman killed several people Tuesday night at a Walmart supermarket in the eastern US state of Virginia, said Chesapeake City police, who killed the gunman.
“We were able to find several dead and wounded,” Chesapeake Police Department Officer Leo Kosinski told reporters at the scene.
“We believe it was a single gunman, who is now dead,” added Kosinski, who praised the quick reaction of his units, who “immediately” entered the store.
The City of Chesapeake noted on its official Twitter account that police had confirmed “a sniper incident with fatalities at Sam’s Circle Walmart”.
“Our first responders are well trained and ready to respond,” he added.
News footage showed a large police presence at the scene.
Kosinski explained that several agents and investigators were searching the commercial area and securing the area.
The exact number of deaths was uncertain. But CBS affiliate WUSA said police did not expect more than 10 deaths.
Virginia State Senator Louise Lucas said she was “absolutely heartbroken that America’s last mass shooting is taking place at a Walmart in my district in Chesapeake, Virginia tonight.”
“I will not rest until we find solutions to end this epidemic of gun violence that has claimed so many lives in our country,” he tweeted.
