Zachlorou: A diamond on the tracks of Odontotos – Watch video

by

Scenes from famous Greek films were filmed in Kato Zachlorou, such as “The Lover of the Shepherdess”, “Golfo” and “Astero”.

It is beautiful, it is magical, it is quiet, it is green and full of running water, and through it passes the Toothedwhich with its sound alone can transport you many decades back in time.

Zachlorou is a small mountain village of Achaia built in the Vouraikos Gorge and is located approximately in the middle of the route of the jagged Diakoftos – Kalavryta. It is located at an altitude of 623 meters and is only 10 kilometers from the town of Kalavryta.

It was built in the years of the Turkish occupation by passers-by, who came chased from the villages of Epirus in the Peloponnese, giving it a name that in Slavic means “behind the mountains” (Zagloro) and its inhabitants were mainly engaged in animal husbandry and agriculture.

Its touristic development is directly linked to the monastery of Megalos Spileos, which is located very close to the village, but also to the impressive gorge of Vouraikos, which starts 3 kilometers north of Zachloros, and after a really wonderful route parallel to the homonymous river, flows into Diakofto.

In the past, the only communication of its inhabitants was through the Toothless. After all, this was and is his only stop along the entire route. The scenery of the gorge and the waters of Vouraikos create images of unrepeatable beauty. The location where Odontotos penetrates into the dark imposing rocks of the gorge, and the passage through the metal bridge of Zachloros shortly after his only stop, are truly magical.
