Every day 20 women are murdered in Mexico. Mobilizations today by activists calling for action to combat gender-based violence
Just 13% of women who suffers physical or psychological violence from their partner in Mexico reports it to some authority, reveals a survey by the Mexican statistics service released yesterday Thursday, ahead of today’s Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
Activists around the world are expected to participate intame in mobilizations calling for stronger measures to be taken to combat the phenomenon of gender-based violence.
SMexico, where around 20 women are murdered every day, the spotlight turned this month on the Morelos state prosecutor’s office, which is accused of trying to cover up the murder of a 27-year-old woman. Initially, the prosecution stated that Ariadna Fernanda Lopez died due to “alcohol poisoning”.
INEGI’s research showed that the probability of a woman reporting to the authorities that she suffered physical or mental violence is extremely low in a wide range of cases.
If the perpetrator is the partner of the victim, only 13.1% report it. In cases of physical or sexual violence at school, it drops to 7.8%, drops to 7.1% in cases of domestic violence, 6.5% in the workplace and 4.3% in the wider community.
One in two women in the survey sample said they had been sexually assaulted in their lifetime, one in five within the last year.
More than a third reported experiencing physical violence, one in ten in the past year.
The most common reason why assaults go unreported is that the victim did not think it was that serious. Some women also said that they did not know how to do it, that they were afraid that they would suffer consequences, that they would be blamed, that they would not be believed, or that they were ashamed.
When they do report the incident, they are more likely to go to a social worker or prosecutor rather than the police. When it is a workplace incident, they most often report it to a union representative or management. If it is an incident at a school, it is more often reported to his address.
The survey, in a sample of girls and women aged 15 and over, recorded the highest percentages of women who have been violently attacked in the age range between twenty and thirty.
