Actress Tania Mendoza, 42, who was abducted in 2010 along with her husband and son, was killed in Cuernavaca (central Mexico) by a gunman riding a motorcycle, local authorities announced on Wednesday.
The attack against her was committed on Tuesday afternoon, while she was waiting for her son at the exit of a sports center, said a source close to the Morelos prosecutor’s office. According to eyewitnesses, the perpetrator arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire immediately against the actress, in front of the eyes of her minor child.
Tanya Mendoza, who was also a model, starred in the action film “La mera mera Reina del Sur”, released in 2005 and based on a novel by Spanish author Arturo Perez Reverte.
There are gangs in Cuernavaca that are mainly involved in drug trafficking.
Mexico has been hit by an endless wave of violence that has claimed the lives of more than 300,000 people since December 2006, according to official figures. Authorities attribute most of the killings to drug cartels.
