Last August, Syrians were the largest group of people seeking asylum in the European Union, followed by Afghans, Indians, Turks and Venezuelans.

European Union member states recorded an increase in first-time asylum seekers in August, the European statistics agency, Eurostat, said today.

A total of 77,595 people applied for asylum in August, an increase of 17% compared to July and 54% compared to August 2021.

This number is also higher than the 49,825 asylum applications recorded in August 2019 before the Covid-19 pandemic affected not only international travel but also migration flows.

Last August Syrians (11,860) were the largest group of people seeking asylum in the European Union, followed by Afghans (10,675), Indians (4,170), Turks (4,105) and Venezuelans (3,565).

Germany was the country that recorded the highest number of asylum applications since the beginning of 2022, according to Eurostat data.

In August, Germany received 16,950 applications, followed by Austria (14,030), France (11,900), Spain (8,650) and Italy (5,985).

These five countries recorded almost two-thirds of all asylum applications, Eurostat said.
