Ukraine’s leadership should be “visionary” to ensure peace, argues Mr Pope Francis, suggesting that Volodymyr Zelensky would have to make concessions to end the war with Russia.
Earlier this month the head of the Roman Catholic Church called for a ceasefire to prevent the conflict from escalating and asked God to “hurry up” to end the war.
In an open letter marking nine months since the Russian invasion, Francis praised the strength shown by Ukrainians in the face of the onslaught.
“The world has known a courageous and strong people, a people who suffer and pray, weep and struggle, resist and hope: a noble and martyred people,” he writes in his letter.
The pope also said he is praying for Ukraine’s leaders. “They are entrusted with the task of governing the country in tragic times and make insightful decisions for peace and the growth of the economy while so much vital infrastructure is being destroyed.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said last week that his country was ready for peace, but only on its own terms that included restoration of all occupied territories.
In an interview last week, Pope Francis said the Vatican was ready to do everything possible to mediate and end the war.
