Four are missing and 240 are homeless so far
Eight dead, four missing and 240 homeless are the tally so far of the major natural disasters that hit the island of Ischia in southern Italy.
The Italian Civil Protection Service announced that the effort to locate the missing continues with drones and specially trained dogs.
At the same time, in addition to the 2 million euros allocated yesterday, Sunday, by the Meloni government declaring Ischia in a state of emergency, today the region of Campania, with Naples as its capital, approved a decision to support the island with another 4 million euros for helping the homeless, reconstruction, but also projects to prevent new landslides.
The Italian press today refers with emphasis to the consequences of the legalization of the arbitrary, which was approved in 2003 by the Berlusconi government, as well as to decisions on the implementation of the relevant procedures, which, according to the Italian environmental organizations, was signed in 2018 by the government of Giuseppe Conte. The position of the Catholic bishop of the island, Gennaro Pascarella, caused a sensation, who asked meaningfully: “did we do everything we could to avoid this foretold tragedy?” The images of the island make us feel pain, shock, they ask us deep questions”.
Vincenzo D’Ambrosio, the mayor of Casamiciola – which is also the worst hit by the downpour – revealed that he had recently pleaded for the riverbed to be cleaned, but his plea was not heeded. Finally, the statement of the Italian Minister of the Environment, Gilberto Piketo Fratin, caused a sensation that “to crack down on arbitrary construction, it would be enough to send the mayors or those who allow arbitrary construction to prison.” According to the minister, these houses must be confiscated by the state and then assessed, on a case-by-case basis, the need for their demolition.
