Ukrainian authorities announced today that they have been forced to go ahead with planned power outages in various parts of the country as work to restore damaged energy infrastructure from Russian missile attacks is delayed.

The operator of the electricity transmission system confirmed that at several power stations it was deemed appropriate to take some units out of operation. All this while the demand is increasing, since in the capital Kyiv and elsewhere there is a deep winter. “Once the units are back in operation, the deficit in the electricity transmission system and consequently the restrictions for consumers will be reduced,” assured Ukrenergo.

The largest private electricity production and supply company in Ukraine, DTEK, informed thati will reduce by 60% the supply to its consumers in Kyiv, where the mercury hovers around zero (0°C). “We do everything possible so that each of our customers to have electricity for 2-3 hours, twice daily”DTEK offices in Kyiv say in a Facebook post.

The power deficit of the national electricity system is down to 27%according to Ukrenergo.

Moscow argues that attacks on vital infrastructure are consistent with the laws of war, adding that Kyiv can end the suffering of Ukrainians if it bows to Russian demands. The Ukrainian government emphasizes that such attacks, which aim to make everyday life unbearable for the civilian population, constitute war crimes.
