China’s ambassador to Britain was summoned by the British government in relation to the BBC’s allegations that Chinese police assaulted one of its journalists covering the protests in Shanghai, as reported in today’s article by the London Evening Standard newspaper.

The Foreign Office did not immediately respond to a Reuters request to confirm the newspaper’s report.

In recent days, citizens in several Chinese cities have been demonstrating against the government’s strict measures to contain COVID, in a show of disbelief seen for the first time the last decade of Xi Jinping’s rule.

The BBC claims its reporter, Ed Lawrence, was beaten, arrested and handcuffed while covering the protests in Shanghai.

“He was held for many hours before being released. During his arrest, the police beat and kicked him. This happened while he was working as an accredited journalist,” the BBC announced on Sunday.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has disputed this information, arguing that the journalist had not declared his status.
