Only 10% of those in high-risk groups have received a booster dose, the Prime Minister pointed out.

French Prime Minister Elizabeth Bourne warned yesterday Tuesday against the resurgence of the new coronavirus pandemic in France, stressing that “more than 40,000 cases” of SARS-CoV-2 are confirmed on a daily basis in the country.

Ms Bourne, speaking before the French National Assembly, expressed concern about the low uptake of booster doses of COVID-19 vaccines among the most vulnerable sections of the population. The disease caused by the virus “continues to kill”, he insisted.

Only 10% of those in high-risk groups have received a booster dose, the Prime Minister pointed out.

“The epidemic is starting again,” she emphasized addressing the semicircle, listing how there was an increase of almost 10% in admissions to hospitals and by 22% in admissions to intensive care units and intensive care units. He underlined that last week almost 400 deaths were confirmed due to complications of COVID-19.

“The new wave reminds us that the virus has not disappeared,” he summarized.

Mrs Bourne referred to the risk of “additional pressure” on the hospital system, as in addition to the resurgence of the new coronavirus pandemic, there is an epidemic of influenza and the worst outbreak of bronchiolitis in France in the last ten years.

For the prime minister of France, some preventive measures need to be reinstated, such as the use of masks in contacts with high-risk persons and places where crowds gather.

According to the data compiled by the website Our World in Data, France has recorded almost 159,000 deaths due to COVID-19 out of a total of about 38 million infections from SARS-CoV-2.
