Brazil: US presidential officials to meet Lula next week

by

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan and the presidency’s Latin America adviser Juan Gonzalez are expected to see Lula on December 5.

US President Joe Biden is preparing to send two of his top advisers to Brazil for talks with the country’s president-elect, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, next week, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters news agency.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan and presidential adviser on Latin America Juan Gonzalez are expected to see Lula on Dec. 5, one of the sources explained, adding that the goal is to reaffirm “corporate relationship between the two countries”.

His inauguration in January, which is expected to be attended by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, and the possibility of Lula making an official visit to Washington in the first half of 2023 will be discussed.

The US government was in contact with the center-left politician’s campaign even before the October election. Lula had held talks with US embassy chargé d’affaires Douglas Koneff in September.

Mr. Biden was among the first foreign leaders to congratulate Lula on his victory over the far-right outgoing president on election night. In part, the move was intended to prevent the outgoing head of Latin America’s largest nation, Jair Bolsonaro, from challenging the result and the electoral system.
