The French jihadist is one of ten defendants in the trial – the largest ever staged before a criminal court in Belgium.

The trial for the deadly jihadist attacks of 2016 in the Belgian capital began today in Brussels, in the presence of the Frenchman Salah Abdeslam, the jihadist who, before Brussels, shed blood in Paris in 2015, with the attacks on the Bataclan theater and other places.

The French jihadist is one of ten defendants in the trial – the largest ever staged before a criminal court in Belgium.

In September, at a pre-trial hearing, Abdeslama had refused to appear before the court.

The first day of the trial is devoted to the formation of the jury.

The trial, which is expected to last 6 to 9 months, is being held at the old NATO headquarters to accommodate the more than 900 plaintiffs and foreign journalists.

The attacks in Brussels were carried out on March 22, 2016 by the jihadist cell that had carried out the November 13, 2015 attacks in Paris, killing 32 people and injuring hundreds.

On the morning of March 22, 2016, two jihadists blew themselves up at Brussels Zaventem International Airport and a third about an hour later in the European capital’s metro.

The toll of the attacks was 32 dead and more than 340 injured.

Abdeslam has already been sentenced to life in prison without parole in France for the Paris attacks.
