Several anti-government protesters took to the streets yesterday to celebrate their team’s defeat at the World Cup being held in Qatar. Videos from several cities showed crowds cheering and dancing in the streets, celebrating the defeat of the Iran national team as they see the team as a representative of the regime they are rebelling against.

The players did not sing the national anthem before their first game, a 6-2 defeat by England, in an apparent show of solidarity with the protesters. But they sang it in the Wales match, which they won 2-0, and in the match against the USA. Some protesters saw this as a betrayal of their cause, although there were reports that the group came under intense pressure from Iranian authorities.
BBC Persian obtained a video showing Samak’s burial on Wednesday morning. Videos also surfaced showing security forces opening fire on people in the southwestern city of Behbahan overnight. Other videos show men and women celebrating in Tehran the exclusion of the national team from the World Cup.

Iranian security forces, however, denied killing peaceful protesters.
