39-year-old mother and eight-year-old son dead – Killed when huge tree fell on family’s home
A mother and her child were killed in a tornado, one of dozens that hit Alabama today, also causing significant property damage and power outages.
The 39-year-old mother and her eight-year-old son were killed when a huge tree fell on the family’s home in the community of Flatwood, which is located north of Montgomery – the capital of the state of Alabama.
It was around 3:30 a.m. (local time) and residents reported hearing sirens about two minutes before the tornado hit. The victims “were out of luck,” a local official said.

The tornado was one of about 30 reported in Mississippi and Alabama, where 20,000 homes and businesses are without power.
Montgomery County is one of the hardest hit areas. “We’re going door-to-door and we’ll continue to do that until we’re sure all the residents are OK. This is our highest priority,” said Sheriff Derrick Cunningham.
In the central and southern American states, tornadoes are a frequent phenomenon. In December 2021, about 80 people died when tornadoes leveled parts of Kentucky.
