Holodomor, as the Ukrainians called the famine (from the words “holod”, meaning “hunger”, and “mor”, meaning “extermination”), “constitutes a crime against humanity”, according to the text approved by the Bundestag.
Germany’s Federal Parliament on Wednesday recognized Soviet leader Joseph Stalin’s Great Famine of 1932-33 as genocide.
All parties supported the resolution except the Left and the Alternative for Germany (AfD).
Holodomor, as the Ukrainians called the famine (from the words “holod”, meaning “hunger”, and “mor”, meaning “extermination”), “constitutes a crime against humanity”, according to the text approved by the Bundestag.
The decision was immediately welcomed by the ambassador of Ukraine in Berlin, Oleksiy Makeyev, speaking in his statement to Deutsche Welle, about “a very important decision that Ukrainians have been waiting for decades”, while emphasizing that “all the democratic parties” were coordinated. and in that they identified similarities with the “genocidal war” that Russia is waging against Ukraine today.
Ukraine itself called the Holodomor “genocide” against its people in 2006.
Russia rejects the charge. He argues that not only Ukrainians, but also Russians, Kazakhs and Volga Germans suffered from the Great Famine in the Soviet Union.
On the occasion of Holodomor Remembrance Day, which is celebrated every fourth Saturday in November, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky again accused Moscow of using similar methods today. “Once they wanted to destroy us with hunger, now with darkness and cold. But we will not bend,” Mr. Zelensky wrote on Telegram, referring to Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure, especially the electricity and water grid.
In addition to Ukraine and Germany, the Great Famine has also been recognized as genocide, according to the Holodomor Museum archive, by Australia, Brazil, Ecuador, Estonia, Canada, Colombia, Georgia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, USA and the Vatican.
