By decision of the Italian Parliament, the four hundred newly elected members of parliament will be able to receive 5,500 euros for the purchase of computers, any type of monitor and headphones.

This is a bonus granted at the beginning of each legislative period, which lasts for five years. In 2018, the corresponding amount was set at 2,500 euros.

After the relevant report by the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, which wrote that the “assistance” is aimed at the technological modernization of members of parliament, many internet users protested, arguing that in a period of economic hardship for citizens and a deep energy crisis it was not necessary the increase of the specific fund.

For his part, the deputy of the Five Star Movement Filippo Serra (member of the committee of the Italian Parliament that deals with the expenses of his colleagues), underlined that “if you take into account the total bonus – which covers the purchase of pens, pencils and other similar objects – compared to the previous legislative period, there was a small reduction in expenses: from 7,500 euros for each member of parliament, they were reduced to 7,250”.
