The UN Secretary General recalled that the world has promised to end AIDS by 2030, but as he said he found that “we are off track”
The message that “the inequalities that perpetuate the AIDS pandemic can and must be overcome” and that “we can stop AIDS”, is sent on the occasion of today’s World AIDS Day by the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres. At the same time, after reminding that the world has promised to end AIDS by 2030, he found that “we are off track”.
“To end AIDS, we must end the inequities that block progress. Today, we are at risk of millions more new infections and millions more deaths,” he pointed out.
On the occasion of today’s World AIDS Day, appealed for the adoption of proven practical actions that will help end AIDS. “Increased availability, quality and appropriateness of HIV treatment, testing and prevention services” he said, stressing that this entails more financial resources, improved legislation, policies and practices to address the stigma and exclusion they face people living with HIV, especially marginalized populations.
“Everyone needs respect and to feel welcome. Everyone needs better technology sharing, to enable equal access to the best HIV science, especially between the South and the North,” concluded the UN Secretary-General.
