Zaporizhia: Russia is throwing the ball at the IAEA for the safety zone at the nuclear plant

by

The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant is the largest in Europe and repeated shelling around the plant has raised concerns about the possibility of a major accident.

The area around Ukraine’s Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, which was seized by Russian forces shortly after they invaded the neighboring country, has since been bombed several times, prompting condemnation from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

These repeated bombings around the station raised concerns about the possibility of a major accident, and the IAEA called for a safety zone around the nuclear facilities.

The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant is the largest in Europe and provided about a fifth of Ukraine’s electricity before Russian forces invaded.

The head of the organization, Raphael Grossi, noted in his statements published today that he hopes that by the end of the year an agreement will be reached with Russia and Ukraine on the creation of this protection zone around the Ukrainian nuclear power plant.

“I am committed to reaching a solution as quickly as possible. I hope by the end of the year,” Grossi underlined in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, published today.

Russia has set out its position on the creation of a safety zone around the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant and is now awaiting a response, Russian news agency RIA reported, citing the head of Russia’s state nuclear agency Rosatom.

“Our representative at the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, is actively working, as we understand, but now the decision is not on the Russian side, it is not in Moscow,” RIA added, citing the statements of Rosatom’s CEO , Alexei Likhachev.

The head of the IAEA did not rule out a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as well as a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“Our goal is to prevent a nuclear accident, not to create a military situation that will favor one side or the other,” Grossi emphasized.
