One person was killed and another wounded in Iraqi Kurdistan today in shelling attributed to Turkey, a local official said, as Ankara toughens its stance against Kurdish PKK rebels.
Since November 20, Turkey has been launching airstrikes mainly in northeastern Syria but also in neighboring northern Iraq. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has threatened to launch a ground military operation.
Earlier today there was “shelling, probably from Turkey” in a mountainous area near the village of Mawat, its mayor, Kamaran Hassan, told AFP. But he was unable to clarify whether it was an aerial bombardment or a drone strike.
“One civilian was killed and a second was injured while they were in their fields,” he said. Another person is missing.
The Turkish armed forces and the Turkish government have not yet reported whether they have carried out strikes in this area.
