In addition to the Wagner group, which is allegedly close to the Kremlin, Cuba and Nicaragua are added to the list “for committing particularly serious violations of religious freedom or tolerating such violations”

The US has added Cuba, Nicaragua and the Russian Wagner mercenary group to its blacklist of countries of “particular concern” on religious freedom issues, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said in a statement today.

The two countries and the Russian group Wagner, which is allegedly close to the Kremlin, are added to this list “for committing particularly serious violations of religious freedom or tolerating such violations,” the State Department statement said.

Already under US sanctions, Cuba and Nicaragua could face further punitive measures in the absence of improvements, according to Washington.

Violations of religious freedom “sow division, undermine economic security, and threaten political stability and peace,” the US Secretary of State emphasized.

Blinken kept on this list all the states that had been on the list since 2021: China, Eritrea, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
