In the previous eruption of Semeros volcano, a year ago, 51 people had lost their lives. Another nearly 10,000 residents had to leave their homes
Semeros volcano, on the Indonesian island of Java, has re-entered a phase of explosive activity, prompting authorities to declare a state of alert, a year after it erupted causing widespread destruction.
Indonesia’s National Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Prevention (PVMBG) raised the alert level on Mount Semeru to maximum, Kompas television reported.
The center considers that there is a “danger” for the “populated areas” around the volcano, as there is a possibility that the activity will “intensify”.
From Mount Semeru, in the eastern part of Java, at an altitude of 3,676 meters, a cloud of volcanic ash rises that has reached a height of approximately 1.5 kilometers.

The Semeru volcano, located 640 kilometers east of the capital Jakarta, entered a phase of explosive activity at 02:46 (local time • yesterday Saturday at 21:46 Greek time).
No injuries have been reported so far. Authorities urged local residents to stay at least 8 kilometers away from the crater. The center’s representative, Thorikul Haq, said that hasty evacuations of civilians have begun.
The Japan Meteorological Agency announced earlier that it was monitoring the situation, as it assessed the risk of a tsunami.
In the previous eruption of Semeros volcano, a year ago, 51 people had lost their lives. Another nearly 10,000 residents had to leave their homes.
Indonesia is on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates intersect and volcanic and seismic activity is intense. An earthquake last month claimed the lives of over 300 people.
The Southeast Asian archipelago has nearly 130 active volcanoes.
