Congress – Message to Turkey: No overflights by NATO allies in the airspace of other allies

by

Senator Robert Menendez continues to hold his veto power as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The American Congress chose to send a clear message to Turkey about the overflights over the Greek islands, which included a relevant reference in the accompanying text of the defense budget (NDAA) that was finalized on Tuesday night.

“We believe that NATO allies should not conduct unauthorized overflights over the airspace of other NATO allies,” US lawmakers note in the explanatory text accompanying the NDAA.

Although the effort to pass an amendment on the F-16s failed, it should be noted that the amendments were initially merely an additional tool, as Senator Robert Menendez continues to hold veto power as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Senate.

In fact, in a recent interview with ERT, he repeated once again that he is not going to consent to the granting of fighter jets to Turkey.
