The spokesman stressed that any form of military action would jeopardize the very difficult progress made by the global coalition against ISIS.
The State Department expressed strong US opposition to any military action against the Kurds in Northern Syria.
The representative of the US State Department made this statement when asked by the Hellas Journal website whether Washington has any message to send to the Turkish President stating that Turkey will invade Syria against the US’s Kurdish allies.
For his part, the spokesman stressed that any form of military action would jeopardize the very difficult progress the global coalition has managed to achieve against him Islamic State.
As he emphasized, “our message on this has been consistent, it has been consistent since our concern about this (issue) arose.” We have continued to make clear – both publicly and privately – that we strongly oppose military action, including a potential ground invasion that would further destabilize the lives of communities in Syria and most importantly jeopardize the hard-won progress of the global coalition against ISIS.”
At the same time, the spokesman called for de-escalation, noting that a possible continuation of hostilities would pose risks to the security of both communities in Syria and US personnel in the area. “All parties, we believe, must immediately de-escalate. This is a message we have been sending consistently over the last few days. Escalation in Syria and along the Turkish-Syrian border would be dangerous. It would be a threat to the safety of civilians and possibly even US personnel, as we have seen with recent attacks,” he noted.
Finally, the State Department spokesman made it clear that the US has communicated very clearly its concerns about the further escalation of the situation, including the continuation of airstrikes.
“We remain concerned by the escalation of activity in northern Syria, including recent airstrikes, some of which have directly threatened the safety of US personnel working to defeat ISIS. We have consistently communicated to Turkey and our local Syrian partners our serious concerns about the potential impact on our D-ISIS targets and civilians on both sides of the border. And so we’ve been conveying that very clearly for the last few days,” the spokesperson noted in his response.
