The former chancellor, in an interview she gave to the German newspaper Die Zeit, emphasized that she does not regret her support for the construction of the German-Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2
The former chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel admitted that there were failures in its politics against Russia.
“We should have reacted more quickly to Russia’s aggression,” Merkel said in an interview with the weekly newspaper Die Zeit, to be published tomorrow Thursday.
Merkel’s comments were in reference to Russia’s occupation and annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in 2014, when NATO member states had agreed to spend 2 percent of their GNP on defense.
“Germany has increased its NATO defense spending, but it still hasn’t reached the 2 percent target,” Merkel said, “and I didn’t make a strong speech in favor of that target every day either.”
The former chancellor emphasized, however, that she does not regret her support for the construction of the German-Russian natural gas pipeline Nord Stream 2. Canceling the project would have “dangerously worsened” the relationship with Russia, Merkel said.
Furthermore, he said that Germany’s dependence on Russian gas was not only a result of this joint pipeline construction project. He explained that excessive dependence is mainly due to very little supply of natural gas from Norway, Britain and the Netherlands.
