The president-elect, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), said on Wednesday night (7) that the deposition and imprisonment of Peruvian president Pedro Castillo took place within the “constitutional framework”.
Lula also said he hoped that the new president Dina Boluarte would be successful “in her task of reconciling the country and leading it on the path of development and social peace.”
This Wednesday, Peru experienced moments of institutional rupture that culminated in the removal and imprisonment of President Pedro Castillo. Faced with an impeachment process, Castillo dissolved Congress, which then reacted by determining his removal.
Lula’s position was disclosed through a note, in which he regrets the events in Peru and chooses not to support the Peruvian leader, populist and leftist.
“I followed with great concern the events that led to the constitutional removal of the president of Peru, Pedro Castillo. It is always regrettable that a democratically elected president has this fate, but I understand that everything was forwarded in the constitutional framework”, said the president-elect.
“What Peru and South America need right now is dialogue, tolerance and democratic coexistence, to solve the real problems we all face,” he added.
Lula then wished success to the president who ascended to power.
“I hope that President Dina Boluarte succeeds in her task of reconciling the country and leading it on the path of development and social peace. I hope that all Peruvian political forces work together, within a constructive democratic coexistence; the only way capable to bring peace and prosperity to the dear and fraternal people of Peru,” he said. He also added that her government will work tirelessly to rebuild regional integration, and that the friendship between Brazil and Peru is “fundamental” in this process.
Earlier, the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said that the ousted president of Peru had taken actions “incompatible with the constitutional normative framework” of the country.
In a note, the Itamaraty stated that the attempt to dissolve Parliament and decree a state of exception was also considered a “violation of the validity of democracy and the rule of law”. The ministry also said it hoped that “the constitutional decision of the Peruvian Congress represents the guarantee of the full functioning of the democratic State in Peru.”
