Olaf Solz: International pressure on Russia averted the risk of nuclear war

“For now, the risk of nuclear escalation has been averted,” the German chancellor said.

Risk of Russia using nuclear weapons in war in Ukraine de-escalated as international community ‘draws red line’ in Moscow, German chancellor says Olaf Solz in an interview published today.

“Something has changed,” which is that “Russia has stopped threatening to resort to the use of nuclear weapons,” Mr. Soltz said in the interview published by Funke Group Media and the French newspaper Ouest France. He added that this is because the international community, including China, has “drawn a red line” to Moscow regarding this danger.

“For now, the risk of nuclear escalation has been averted,” the German chancellor said.

In this regard, he added, his recent trip to China – for which he was criticized – bore fruit: “During my visit to Beijing, Chinese President Xi (Jinping) and I jointly declared that nuclear weapons should not be used. A short time later, the G20 countries expressed the same position again.”

Asked about the belligerence sparked by recent statements by French President Emmanuel Macron, who estimated that “guarantees” should be given to Russia in order to achieve a balance in the context of the creation of a new security architecture in Europe, Olaf Solz acknowledged that the issue will need to be examined in time.

“The priority is for Russia to immediately end the war and withdraw its troops,” he said. “It is true that then we will have to see how we will guarantee security in Europe.”

“We are certainly willing to discuss arms control in Europe with Russia. We had already proposed this before the war, and this position has not changed,” he added.

After threats to use nuclear weapons by Russian officials in recent months, Russian President Vladimir Putin said yesterday that Moscow would not be the first to use nuclear weapons, only resorting to them if attacked.

But he judged that “the threat of nuclear war is magnified”, blaming the Americans and the Europeans, against the background of the confrontation between Russia and the West over Ukraine.
