‘The choice was Greiner or nothing’: US ‘apologizes’ for not freeing Russians and Paul Whelan

by

“It wasn’t a choice which American to bring home,” Joe Biden said of Paul Whelan.

To answer the question why together with the basketball player Britney Greiner the other American citizen was not released either Paul Whelan rushed the US, both through President Biden and through high-ranking officials.

“It wasn’t a choice which American to bring home,” Joe Biden said of Paul Whelan.

“We have not forgotten Paul Whelan, who has been wrongfully detained in Russia for years. It wasn’t a choice which American to bring home. Earlier this year we brought in Trevor Reed when we had the opportunity this year. “Unfortunately, for completely illegal reasons, Russia is treating Paul’s case differently than Britney’s,” clarified
Biden on Thursday.

“Although we have not yet succeeded in securing Paul’s release, we are not giving up. We will never give up” Biden pointed out. “We remain in close contact with Paul’s family, the Whelan family. My thoughts and prayers are with them today. They must have mixed feelings today,” he admitted.

“I guarantee,” he stressed according to CNN, that the US will continue to work for Whelan’s release.

“The choice was to take her Britney or nothing,” he said characteristically on the part of a high-ranking American official.

Paul Whelan, a US ex-Marine, has been held in Russia since 2018 after being convicted of espionage in 2020.
