The price of a basket of products typical of Christmas dinner rose by 9.8%, on average, in Brazil, within a year, pointed out this Thursday (8) the Abras (Brazilian Association of Supermarkets).

The value was calculated at R$ 294.75 at the beginning of this month, R$ 26.30 more than the R$ 268.45 of the same period last year.

The basket is made up of ten products: Christmas birds, olive oil, a box of bonbons, sparkling wine, sirloin, panettone, ham, turkey, cider and tenderloin.

In presenting the data, Marcio Milan, vice-president of Abras, said that the calculation still does not include the effect of possible discounts on the eve of Christmas.

“This 2022 price is the current price, the reference price of the supermarkets themselves, which have not yet entered with their offers and promotions”, he said.

The Abras survey also includes a selection of the country’s major regions. The highest average value of the Christmas basket was registered in the North: BRL 306.34, 3.1% above 2021.

The Southeast had the lowest average price, calculated at R$ 282.39. The region, however, recorded the highest increase, of 17%, compared to 2021.

“This is an average for the region. When we talk about Christmas birds, we take into account more than one type, the same thing with olive oils, and so on. They are averages for reference,” reported Milan.

“There are alternative brands. It is possible that each one will adjust according to their income, according to their pocket,” he added.

Despite the survey signaling higher prices this year, 66% of Brazilian supermarkets project higher consumption than Christmas 2021, informed Abras.

Another 27% expect the same level as last year, while 7% estimate a lower level of business on that date.

The sector also projects growth of 11.2% in meat consumption at Christmas and a 12.5% increase in beverages, according to the Abras balance sheet.
