The so-called “merchant of death” is said to be the most “prolific” arms dealer in recent decades, fueling bloody conflicts in Africa and beyond.
The Pentagon said Thursday that there is some “concern” that Mr Victor Booth, O who returned to Russia on Thursday after being traded for Brittney Greiner, could return to the illegal international arms trade.
“I think there is a concern that he would go back to doing the same kind of work that he did in the past,” a senior US Defense Department official told reporters after Bout was released by US authorities.
The so-called “merchant of death” is said to be the most “prolific” arms dealer in recent decades, fueling bloody conflicts in Africa and beyond. He was serving a 25-year prison sentence in the US on charges of conspiracy to kill Americans, acquire and export anti-aircraft missiles and provide material support to a terrorist organization.
The US official said the Defense Department would continue to work with its partners in Africa to understand the current risk factors in the international arms trade.
“There are a number of factors out there who have influence in the Russian oligarchy,” the official said. “We will continue to work with African partners to understand the risks and threats of the people they work with and the organizations they work with,” the US official added.
