An operation is underway to locate and rescue the residents of the apartment building who are believed to be trapped in the debris
London, Thanasis Gavos
A powerful explosion at a block of flats in St Helier, the capital of the semi-autonomous island of Jersey in the English Channel, occurred just before 4am local time.
According to local police, the building has essentially been leveled, leaving one person dead and “about 12” missing. Two injured people were taken to the hospital, while around 30 other tenants have been taken to the town hall area.
An operation is underway to locate and rescue residents believed to be trapped in the debris. However, the operation is described as “dangerous” and is expected to last for a number of days.
The explosion was so powerful that it was recorded by seismologists as a minor earthquake. The cause is not yet known, although the company that supplies natural gas to the area has announced that it is participating in the investigation to determine what caused the deadly explosion.
