“There are problems, but none of the traders are talking about any suspension of shipments,” said Ukraine’s Minister of Agriculture
Traders do not plan to suspend grain exports from the Black Sea port of Odesa, in southern Ukraine, due to the recent Russian attack on the region’s energy system, Ukraine’s Agriculture Minister Mykola Solsky said today.
“There are problems, but none of the traders are talking about any suspension of shipments. Ports are using alternative energy sources,” Solsky told Reuters by phone.
More than 1.5 million people in the southern region of Odessa have been left without power after the Russian strikes with unmanned aircraft (drones) in the region’s power generation system, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his videotaped speech last night.
Since October, Moscow has been targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, launching missile and drone strikes.
Odesa regional authorities announced that power supply to the city’s population would be restored “in the coming days”, while the full restoration of power networks may take two to three months.
Ukraine is among the world’s largest producers and exporters of corn and wheat, but its exports have fallen significantly due to the Russian invasion.
At the end of July came the almost six-month blockade of three Ukrainian ports in the Black Sea region of Odessa, which was triggered by the invasion of Russian forces, under an agreement reached between Moscow and Kiev brokered by the UN and Turkey .
Grain exports from Ukraine in the first eight days of December fell by 47.6% compared to last year and amounted to 1.09 million tons, according to data from the country’s Ministry of Agriculture.
