The new president, Dina Boluarte, assumed her duties after the ouster of the previous president, Pedro Castillo.
Two people have died in protests against Peru’s new president, Dina Bolluarte, in Adahuilas, a remote town in the Andean country’s south, 750 kilometers from the capital Lima, Interior Minister Cesar Cervantes said.
“We mourn the death of two people”, while there are also “injuries in the incidents. I appeal to the population to remain calm,” the minister told the RPP radio station.
Earlier, the police announced one death — that of a teenage girl — and five injuries in the incidents.
The new president, Dina Boluarte, took office last week after the ouster of former president Pedro Castillo.
Pedro Castillo attempted last Wednesday to dissolve Parliament and impose a state of emergency on the country, an action described as a “coup”. At the request of the Prosecutor’s Office, which is suing him for “sedition” and “conspiracy”, he was remanded in custody on Thursday for seven days.
