by

The governments of Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia and Mexico issued a joint statement this Monday afternoon (12) urging Peru to protect the human and legal rights of former President Pedro Castillo, who has been imprisoned since last Wednesday (7). after being ousted following a failed coup d’état attempt.

The countries, governed by leftist leaders, expressed support for the politician, called president in the statement. “Castillo, since the day of his election, has been the victim of harassment that violates the American Convention on Human Rights,” says the text, released by the chancellery of Bogotá.

“We urge institutions to refrain from reversing the popular will expressed through the free popular vote.”

Since the dismissal and imprisonment of Castillo, with the inauguration of Dina Boluarte as president, Peru has experienced a wave of protests that have left at least five dead.

Of the signatories of the letter, Mexico has already had diplomatic friction with Lima due to the case – the populist politician would have tried to flee to the North American country and made a formal request for asylum, and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he would wait to recognize Dina as Chief Executive.

Argentine Alberto Fernández, in turn, has already called Dina.
