The Prime Minister Rishi Sunak Britain has reached a new deal with Albania to limit the number of irregular migrants arriving in small boats, he said today, as part of measures to speed up the processing of asylum claims.

The number of Albanians arriving in England via the English Channel has risen sharply in the past two years with government figures showing that Albanians represent the largest group arriving in the UK via this route.

Sunak said that early next year the government would introduce legislation to ban migrants crossing the Channel from remaining in Britain.

“If you enter the UK illegally, you should not be able to stay here,” Sunak told Parliament. “Instead, you will be detained and quickly returned either to your home country or to a safe country where your asylum claim will be considered.”

The issue of migrants arriving in small boats has become a major political issue for the Conservative government, particularly in working-class areas of northern and central England, where migrants are accused of they make it difficult finding work and putting pressure on public services.
