The European Commission’s foreign affairs spokesman noted that “we have repeatedly made it clear that replacing threatening rhetoric with meaningful and honest dialogue and communication is the key to de-escalating tensions.”
“The EU has repeatedly emphasized that the hostile comments against Greece raise serious worries and are in complete contrast to the much-needed de-escalation efforts in the Eastern Mediterranean” emphasized the representative of the Commission for foreign affairs, Peter Stano, asked about Turkey’s latest threats against Greece and the use of Typhoon missiles.
“I recall our September 5 statement on this, stressing that threats and aggressive rhetoric are unacceptable and must stop,” Peter Stano pointed out.
At the same time, he noted “we have repeatedly made it clear that replacing threatening rhetoric with meaningful and honest dialogue and communication is the key to easing tensions, promoting mutual understanding and developing good neighborly relations between Greece and Turkey as well as regionally in the Eastern Mediterranean ».
“We reiterate again our expectation from Turkey to work seriously to de-escalate tensions in a sustainable way” he underlined.
Also, regarding Turkey’s non-alignment with the EU sanctions against Russia, the Commission representative said that “we have referred to this issue in the past, which is of the utmost importance, especially given the current critical geopolitical situation. We have repeatedly expressed our strong expectation that Turkey will comply with the EU sanctions against Russia and cooperate with us in enforcing them and preventing any attempt at circumvention.”
“More recently, the Turkish authorities have given positive signals as to their readiness to cooperate with us on this issue, which is of course a development we can welcome. We look forward to seeing the relevant actions in this direction and we hope that this cooperation will start quickly” Peter Stano pointed out.
