Intense diplomatic activity has been developing in recent days to resolve the Kosovo issue.
THE EU Ombudsman Miroslav Lajčak and US special envoy Gabriel Escobar yesterday, Tuesday, visited Pristina, where they met with the political leadership of Kosovo, while today they are in Belgrade.
On the negotiating table is the Franco-German proposal based on the two-German model from 1971, when normalization of relations between the Federal Republic of Germany (FDR) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) was agreed without mutual recognition. Gabriel Escobar said yesterday from Pristina that “this proposal has the full support of the US”. He said that the negotiations are at a very sensitive point and restraint is required from both sides so as not to cause tensions that will damage the dialogue.
Escobar during the meeting with the Prime Minister of Kosovo Albin Kurti made it clear that what was agreed should be respected and the formation of the Union of Serbian Municipalities agreed in 2013 in Brussels should be allowed. The American special envoy was also clear about Serbia’s request to have a military presence in Kosovo. “The United States of America categorically opposes the possibility of the return of Serbian forces to the territory of Kosovo. I also want to say that Kosovo has very strong security guarantees from the US,” Escobar emphasized in an interview with Radio Free Europe’s Albanian service.
