According to the report (p. 12 et seq.), 11 murders of media workers were recorded in the Latin American country from January to December 1. This number represents nearly 20% of murders worldwide (57).

“Civil society and international organizations’ pressures and authorities’ protection mechanisms have proven insufficient,” RSF said.

Other press freedom organizations are calling for even more deaths of media workers in Mexico this year: calling 2022 the deadliest year for journalists on record.

The increase in cases of murders of journalists (+18.8%), is attributed by the NGO mainly to the war in Ukraine. The number of murders had fallen to “historically low” levels in 2021 (48) and 2020 (50).

Despite the war in Ukraine, almost half of the murders of media workers were committed in the Americas.

Countries affected by waves of violence (Haiti, Nicaragua, Brazil…) are among those characterized as the most dangerous for those investigating cases linked to organized crime, gangs and corruption, the text notes.

RSF highlights the murders of three reporters in Brazil, where the issue of deforestation of the Amazon forest and illegal logging has grown. The case of the murder of the British journalist Dom Phillips was among the most emblematic.

The organization still speaks of 49 journalists missing and another 65 abducted worldwide.
