Commission – Pfizer agreement for faster delivery of vaccine doses to the EU

by

The European Commission has agreed with BioNtech-Pfizer to speed up the delivery of its vaccine to the Member States, starting within a few weeks.

In the first quarter of 2022, BioNtech-Pfizer will deliver an additional 20 million doses of vaccine (5 million in January, 5 million in February and 10 million in March). These are additional installments of the already planned 195 million, bringing the total number of deliveries of BioNtech-Pfizer in the first quarter to 215 million.

Last Thursday, 16 December, the Commission also agreed with Moderna to deliver additional installments in the first quarter of 2022.

This will be particularly useful for Member States that have a short-term need for additional doses of vaccine.

Given the deteriorating epidemiological situation in the European Union in recent months, full vaccination and the introduction of support parameters remain one of the EU’s top health priorities. Given the expected rapid increase in infections due to the Omicron variant, this is more urgent than ever.

The Commission continues to work closely with vaccine manufacturers to further accelerate the delivery of doses to Member States, so that vaccination and booster doses increase in the coming weeks and months.

The Commission and the Member States have also activated a first option for orders over 200 million installments under the third contract with BioNTech-Pfizer.

This order also covers vaccines adapted to the Omicron variant, if these vaccines become available. With this order, the EU prepares in case customized vaccines are needed. Deliveries of these over 200 million installments are expected to take place from the second quarter of 2022.

These installments add to the 450 million installments already scheduled to be delivered in 2022 under the agreement already signed.

The total number of deliveries from BioNTech-Pfizer will reach 650 million installments in 2022.
