Italy: Major banking group establishes four-day working week model

From January, bank employees who wish to will be able to work 9 hours a day, in exchange for one day off during the week

Italian bank Intesa Sanpaolo announced today that it plans to offer its employees the option of a four-day working week, without salary change, becoming the first major group in Italy to introduce this employment model.

The banking group emphasizes in a press release that responds in the “need to have a balance” between professional and private life and believes that the new working model will make him “more dynamic”.

From January, bank employees who wish to do so will be able to work 9 hours a day (instead of 7.5 hours today) in exchange for one day off during the week. By adopting this model the working time is reduced to 36 hours a weekinstead of 37.5 which is today.

At the same time, the Italian bank offers its employees the possibility telecommuting until 120 days a yearwhich will allow it to reduce its energy costs.

However, after five months of negotiations, the management of the banking group has not managed to convince the trade unions of the advantages of the new working model. In particular for telecommuting, the unions are asking for monthly compensation for energy costs and internet connection.

The Intesa Sanpaolo banking group employs 74,000 employees in Italy and in total 96,000 worldwide.
