Peru’s Congress rejects proposal to bring general elections to December 2023

by

The Peruvian Congress rejected this Friday (16) a proposal presented by the party of Keiko Fujimori, opponent of former president Pedro Castillo in last year’s election, to bring forward the presidential elections to December 2023. political and social crises since the removal of the politician from the post of president after a failed attempt at a coup d’état.

The decision should further increase the population’s dissatisfaction with Congress – last month’s surveys indicate that 86% of Peruvians disapprove of the Legislature.

This Friday, Peruvian Health Minister Rosa Gutiérrez announced that the number of deaths in the acts in defense of Castillo had risen to 18. Federal management ombudsman Eliana Revollar said the count could reach 20.

Protesters calling for Castillo’s release and the dissolution of parliament have blocked roads, set buildings on fire and stormed airports. The current Peruvian president, Dina Boularte, who was Castillo’s deputy and assumed the presidency, is seen as a traitor by the populist’s supporters.

In an attempt to appease the protests, Dina announced on Tuesday (13) that she was negotiating with Congress to bring the general elections forward.

Castillo is accused of rebellion and conspiracy after a failed coup attempt. He denies the accusations, and claims to follow the country’s leader by right — he has been communicating with his supporters through his Twitter profile, where he posts handwritten messages signed “constitutional president of Peru”.
