Italy’s Democratic Party (PD) announced today the suspension of MEP Andrea Coccolino’s party status in connection with the pending corruption scandal in the European Parliament.

The decision was taken at a party meeting and took effect immediately until the completion of the ongoing investigation into the “Qatargate” scandal, as specified in a related announcement.

The Democratic Party justified the decision by emphasizing that it was intended to protect its image while allowing Coccolino to devote himself to organizing his defensive line.

The 60-year-old politician from Naples has been an MEP since 2009. Eva Caili’s partner, Francesco Giorgi, who was an assistant to MEP Coccolino, was remanded in custody as part of the investigation into the corruption scandal involving bribes from Qatar and Morocco.

Yesterday Thursday, Coccolino had expressed his anger at the involvement of his name in the scandal, in a statement broadcast by the Ansa and Adnkronos agencies, underlining that he is not under investigation. “I am not under investigation, I have not been interrogated, no audits have been carried out against me, nor has my office been sealed,” said Coccolino and emphasized that he is ready to defend his honor and reputation.
