United Europeans have achieved a lot, Greece is at the core of European integration, stressed Mr. Schinas

“Europe is full of light, just a few moments some went to darken it. They did not make it. And I assure you, here today from Thessaloniki, that even now they will not be able to tarnish it” emphasized the vice-president of the European Commission, responsible for the promotion of the European way of life, Margaritis Schinasat tonight’s “Hellenic Value” awards ceremony of the Association of Greek Industries, in Thessaloniki.

Mr. Schinas called on the European Parliament to undertake “every possible transparency initiative” until the next European elections, underlining that the European Commission will be a supporter in this effort, which he has already announced, in the “fight against corruption”.

“There are many opportunities that open up in front of us in this period. And of course my presence here precisely signals this deeply optimistic, positive, aspect of Europe. Europe as we want it” said the vice-president of the European Commission and added: “The positive agenda is a given. Europe took existential leaps, not to stand tall, but to be able to progress in the future. Prerequisite, basic, central, catalytic, for all these have always been its unwavering principles, its value base that has never accepted any discount. And now Europe is in a battle of dignity that it will never allow anyone to question.” “In less than two years we will be called to vote in the European elections. Until the moment of the Eurocalp, the European Parliament must take every possible initiative of transparency, so that it continues to be the center of our democratic culture and nothing less. We, as the European Commission, will help in this effort, with proposals and initiatives for the fight against corruption, which we have already announced. Of course, no systemic improvement will be able to solve the problem, when the ethos of individual responsibility is missing.”

United Europeans have achieved a lot, Greece is at the core of European integration, emphasized Mr. Schinas.

The vice-president of the European Commission welcomed the timeless initiatives and actions of the SBE and its “historic presidents” and congratulated its new president, Loukia Sarantis, wishing every success in the new path of the SBE and stressing that his help and assistance is a given. He emphasized that the “new page of SBE also coincides with the new era, in which the development dynamics of Europe, but also of our country, enters” and added: “Despite the geopolitical instability, the war, the energy crisis and the high inflation , Europe begins the process of retrenchment. United Europeans have achieved a lot. And much more than Europe’s enemies expected.”

Mr. Schinas referred to the European “response” to the pandemic with vaccines, the Recovery Fund, the “defense of our external borders against the threats of those who instrumentalized immigration” and support for the war-torn Ukraine. “And I am very optimistic that next Monday, December 19, we will have a similarly good development in the matter of energy” continued Mr. Schoinas and continued: “If Europe has achieved and is achieving a lot, Greece today, at the core of European integration , attracts capital and investment 30% about more than the pre-pandemic era. It notes, in fact, today that we are speaking, the highest investment growth rate in the EU”.

Mr. Schinas underlined that after the “historic” decision of the Eurogroup, a few days ago, Greece’s economy is “completely free of restrictions linked to the commitments of 2018, which are far away” and added: “However, this does not mean that the EU support stops here, I would even say the opposite. In the midst of a difficult geopolitical and macroeconomic era, which de facto limits the fiscal space in the EU, Greece will continue to benefit steadily from the, anyway, unprecedented financing and financial assistance, which will significantly help to absorb the shocks of possible , I say again, due to external conditions, imbalances”.

Mr. Schinas specifically referred to the European resources intended for Greece, underlining that they highlight it “as the most privileged recipient of support in the EU”. “In total, the EU has committed financial tools for Greece that exceed 40% of the Gross National Income until 2027, automatically highlighting it as the most privileged recipient of support in the EU” emphasized the vice-president of the European Commission and added: “The Recovery Fund and resilience from which Greece will benefit with more than 30 billion in grants and loans, i.e. 16% of its GDP, figures that put it in the top five, an amount capable of mobilizing around 60 billion euros in investments, according to national planning from 2026. In addition to the Recovery Fund, Greece can receive support of up to 25% of its GDP by 2027. This is equivalent to more than 48 billion for the twin transitionbut also the agri-food sector and agriculture, the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises and several more targeted options important for the development of the country”.

Mr. Schinas pointed out that this planning and the resources allocated to improve products, train human resources, facilitate access to new markets are aimed at long-term benefits in production, as they seek to “strengthen the living economy of its backbone productive tissue” of the country, i.e., “small and medium-sized entrepreneurs, farmers, but also start-ups, who look to a sustainable future” and added: “These resources will be in the form of grants and will not burden the public debt” .

Mr. Schinas also noted that to all this is added the continuation of financial tools and programs for the new period, to facilitate investments and attract investors, such as, e.g. the InvestEU, through the partnership of the European Investment Bank, the EBRD, but also possibilities arising from the conventional banks and added: “A few weeks ago I was in Athens, where I participated in the event for the signing of 400 million euros by the InvestEU SME Facility, a mechanism that will help liquidate at least 1.5 billion euros in new loans for new innovative businesses in Greece”.
