The two new towers of the Sagrada Familia were tonight illuminated for the first time, marking a new chapter in the completion of Barcelona’s imposing cathedral, whose construction began 140 years ago and has now entered the final stretch.

The new towers, which are dedicated to the evangelists Luke and Mark, are adorned by two impressive sculptures (a bull and a lion). They were illuminated after the traditional Christmas concert hosted every year in the basilica designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí.

With the two new structures, which reach a height of 135 meters, 11 of the 18 designed towers have been completed, including half of the central ones on which the relevant committee has focused its efforts.

“By the end of 2023 we plan to have completed the towers dedicated to Matthew and John, which will allow us to inaugurate the completed dedication to the evangelists,” said Esteve Camps, president of the foundation promoting the construction of the Sagrada Familia .

By 2026, when Barcelona will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the death of the great Catalan architect, it is estimated that the tower of Jesus Christ will be completed. It will be the highest point of the building (172.5 meters), according to Gaudi’s plan.

The committee that finances the construction of the Sagrada Familia, mainly thanks to private donations and income from tourists, had originally planned to complete all the work in 2026. But due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the work was stopped and the authorities were forced to revise the schedule.

No specific date has yet been announced for the completion of the work, which began in 1882 and which Gaudí spent four decades on – until his death in 1926, when he was run over by a passing tram.
