Kiev’s fury at FIFA – Zelensky adviser Mykhailo Podoliak tweeted that FIFA “shows a lack of understanding of the devastation the Russian Federation is wreaking on the world”
The president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky suggested on Sunday that a world peace conference be held this winter in a video message, which Kyiv hoped would be broadcast before the World Cup finals now underway.
CNN reported on Friday that Zelenskiy had asked FIFA to allow him to deliver a message of peace before the final.
“We offered a type of Peace to the world. Absolutely fair. We offered it because in war there are no winners, there can be no draw,” Zelensky said in a message released by his office.
“I announce the initiative to organize a Conference for a type of World Peace this winter. A conference that will unite all the nations of the world around the cause of world peace. Stadiums are empty after the game and after the war the cities are empty. Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian president was keen to appear via video conference ahead of tonight’s World Cup final at Doha’s Lusail Stadium, where Argentina face France. According to CNN estimates, hundreds of millions of viewers around the world will watch the match.
FIFA did not respond to repeated requests for comment.
Mykhailo Podoliak, an adviser to the Ukrainian president, tweeted that FIFA “shows a lack of understanding of the devastation the Russian Federation is wreaking on the world by launching a war in Ukraine.”
FIFA – not just about football, but values. About civilized world’s rules and that you can sort things out without murdering. Unfortunately, FIFA shows lack of understanding of the disaster that RF is dragging the world into by starting war in 🇺🇦. It is still not too late to fix it.
