On the sixth anniversary of the deadly 2016 attack by a jihadist who rammed a truck into a Berlin Christmas market, German Interior Minister Nancy Fesser stressed that the fight against Islamic extremism and terrorism must continue because the threat “continues ” and remains undiminished.
In the press release published by her services yesterday Sunday, on the eve of the anniversary, the SPD minister also notes that “we must turn with more empathy and more support to the people whose lives have been dramatically changed by this horrible attack.”
On December 19, 2016, a jihadist drove a stolen truck into the Christmas market at Breitscheidplatz, the square in front of a Protestant church named after Wilhelm II, the last German emperor (“Kaiser”), a landmark of the German capital.
This act of terrorism resulted in the deaths of 13 people — the last victim succumbing to complications years later. About 70 other people were injured, several seriously. The perpetrator was initially able to escape, but was located in Italy, where he was shot dead by the police.
December 19 is a day of mourning for the victims, both those who lost their lives and those who were physically and mentally injured, Mrs Fezer emphasized. “And it’s also a day of shame because federal and state authorities have been unable to prevent crime, and also because the needs of victims and their families have been neglected for far too long,” he added.
