Nigeria: 38 killed in attacks on three villages

by

A total of 38 people were killed Sunday in gun attacks on three villages in the northern Nigerian state of Kantuna.

The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a police recruiting center in Cantona, killing at least 38 people, according to Cantona State Commissioner Samuel Arouane. The gunmen set fire to houses, vehicles and agricultural products on several farms.

Mr Arwan added that security personnel had been deployed in the villages, where 29 of the people killed had been identified so far, and efforts were being made to identify the remaining nine.

Last night, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari condemned the “new horrific attacks” in a press release issued by his services, referring to “unacceptable killings”.

Earlier in the week, other civilians were killed in various communities in Kantuna state, Bouhari said, urging security and intelligence chiefs to do “everything possible” to end the violence.

For years, northwestern and central Nigeria have been the scene of attacks by heavily armed gangs, which authorities generally call bandits: attacking villages, kidnapping, looting, and killing.

By the end of 2020, gangs are increasingly targeting schools; kidnapping students to ransom their parents.

A month of interruption of telecommunications and military operations in the region did not end their activities.

Cantuna is one of the three states hardest hit by bandit attacks, which also involve street kidnappings.

In August, a gang attacked a heavily guarded military academy in Cantona, the capital of the homonymous state, killing two officers and abducting a third in a rare and daring act against the armed forces (24608834).

The gangs, in order to escape from the authorities, set up camps in the vast Rugo forest, which extends to the states of Zamfara, Cantuna, Katsina and Niger (northwest).
